Lottery prize is a trip to the jail
A convenience store worker allegedly won $200 from scratch-off Tennessee Lottery tickets he is accused of stealing from the BP Station at 430 S. White St. last week. The bad news is that it landed him in the McMinn County Justice Center on a charge of theft over $1,000. |

Council gives schools more in its budget
A standing room only crowd was in attendance Wednesday night as the City Council met the Athens City Schools a little more than half-way and increased the schools' budget by $341,300. City Councilman Shane Jackson made the motion that finally passed unanimously by the Council. He suggested giving the school system 70 percent of the total $867,000 they requested, which included $296,200 the city already had in its budget. |

Private firm buys Waupaca 'Business as usual' is the goal
WAUPACA, Wisc. - ThyssenKrupp AG, a global materials and technology group based in Essen, Germany, announced today the sale of ThyssenKrupp Waupaca Inc., its U.S. foundry business, to an affiliate of KPS Capital Partners, LP (KPS), a New York-based private-equity firm. A "stock purchase agreement" (SPA) signed by both parties was approved by the ThyssenKrupp AG Supervisory Board on Tuesday. |

ETOWAH -- Etowah Utilities Board customers can expect a 5 percent increase in their water and sewer rates. During a budget meeting on Tuesday night, EUB General Manager Brian Solsbee told board members the rate hike is needed. |

Early birds already set up for Highway 11 Antique Alley Sale
The U.S. 11 Antique Alley Sale doesn't officially begin until Thursday, but a few early birds are already offering their goods to early bargain hunters. The U.S. 11 Antique Alley Sale is May 17-20 this year - it is always the four-day weekend (Thursday-Sunday) after Mother's Day. Memorial Day service scheduled in Meigs
DECATUR - The Meigs Color and Honor Guard will be having its annual Memorial Day service on Monday, May 28, in front of the Meigs County Courthouse in Decatur. The service will start at 11 a.m. and will last approximately one hour, with the finish by the Firing Detail, the sounding of "Taps" and raising of the flag to full-staff. In case of rain, the service will be conducted at the Meigs County Fairground Pavilion. |

No tax hike budget OK'd in Etowah
ETOWAH - Etowah residents won't see a tax increase this year, but the city's employees could get a raise. City Commissioners approved the 2012-13 operating budget on the first reading during a called meeting on Monday evening. The budget, explained City Manager Matthew Gravley, had more available funds than the city realized during the previous workshop |

Athens school budget awaits Council's action
Athens City School Board members discussed during their meeting Monday night that they would know tonight the Athens City Council's decision on funding the city's school system. The School Board formally presented its proposed 2012-13 budget request on May 7 for the Council to allocate $2,692,600 for the school system. |

$63K allocated for improvements
ETOWAH - City Manager Matthew Gravley has presented city commissioners with a Capital Improvement Needs Inventory, along with a budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year. Gravley explained the inventory is a new tool for the commissioners to use when planning how to spend the city funds in the capital projects and equipment funds. |
