NIOTA - Niota moved one step closer to an all-appointed board on Monday with the resignation of Water Commissioner Brenda Rutledge. Mayor Cecil Black read a letter in which Rutledge, who was elected in 2008, asked the board to accept her resignation.

Columnists
  • Columnists & letter writers, scary drivers get readers' attention
Readers continue to let their opinions be known about some of The DPA's column writers, along with writers of recent letters to the editor. Also receiving attention were Athens issues and bad driving habits encountered on the roadways.
  • We Asked: Are electric cars the wave of the future and would you buy one?
I would probably buy one, but I would want to see how it would affect my electricity bill first. I don't see a future for all cars being electric. Too many people depend on gas.
  • Conservatives' writings inaccurate and offensive
I have been a loyal reader of The Daily Post-Athenian for around a half a century. During that almost 50 years, I have seldom been compelled to write to the editor to express my opinion on an article or letter published in this fine newspaper, but several letters and articles printed over the past few months I have found to not only be factually inaccurate, but occasionally grossly offensive.
  • It's not just cops who need to talk to Athens residents
Chief Ziegler's policy requires every patrol officer to make it a point to interact with the public on a daily basis. All of the patrol officers are required to make some form of contact with three citizens on every shift and talk with them, so they aren't always just seen cruising along in their squad cars or parked alongside the road looking for speeders.
  • Super talent in our community
Pass the popcorn. It's that time of the year again, when we spend three-plus hours on Sunday night watching the Academy Awards, even though most of us haven't seen even one of the pictures nominated, or know even half of the actors and actresses.

SoundOff
  • Letter taking Williams to task draws praise
The writings of Mike Williams and a letter to the editor printed in last Friday's edition of The DPA taking him to task for a recent column drew comments from several readers this past week with several saying the letter writer presented a good counterbalance of opinions. Athens issues also drew attention from "Sound Off" readers as well. Below are the comments for this week:
  • Traffic, litter, police on the minds of readers
Traffic, litter along local roadways and police matters were among the many issues on the minds of callers to the "Sound Off" over the past week.
  • Comments on police & they're not all critical
Law enforcement brought in the most comments over the past few days, but no one agency was targeted for criticism. In fact, not all those comments were critical and one actually expressed thanks for help during the weekend snow.
  • Dog shooting ignites a storm of indignation
When Calhoun Police James Burris shot and killed a dog on family's front porch, he ignited a firestorm of indignation from many "Sound Off" readers. Some of the comments made were deleted due to their nature and tone, but most are printed below along with opinions on other subjects.
  • Readers deliver comments on many issues & subjects
Readers helped keep the "Sound Off" line last week as they delivered dozens of comments on a variety of issues and subjects. There were so many, in fact, that we could not include them all today. We again remind readers that we don't print comments that criticize or praise candidates running for office in upcoming local elections. If you want to share your opinions about any of the candidates you can write a signed letter to the editor.
